Personality & Traits

General Overview Summary from the report of LTCDR Dave Elliott, Psychologist, USN:

Brennan's updated file reflects an officer who can be summarised as a level-headed, though overly sentimental, officer-- a man who appreciates the spirit of laws and regulations over the letter of it. Brennan has become a respected officer in the United States Inspector General's Office as he is recognised as an officer who is guided by his conscience and experience, who will often do his best to obtain a compromise in even the worst of situations.

Positive and diplomatic, Brennan's morality and care does possess a darker side; a simmering warrior who is capable in a fight. A man not given to impulse, he has been recognised for a calculating battlefield acumen when required.

As a result, Brennan often understands the duality of warfighting priorities and the need for administrative order. Though, this duality creates a man who is often conflicted when in private.

Brennan's being is characterised by balance. Intellect and creativity, diplomacy and violence. Getting that in check at the right time has been a long road for this officer. He revels in compromise and despises a disordered environment.
Strengths & Weaknesses While he has worked to maintain his proficiency in combat, his skills in this area have diminished since taking on a more administrative role and this is an area for improvement. Additionally, can take time to reconcile with big decisions.
Ambitions Brennan has longed to return to combat duty since being taken off the line over five years ago. While he finds his work as an investigator often fulfilling, it often doesn't have the sort of immediate feedback in success and failure that he requires. Given his desire to return to the fight, he campaigns hard to be assigned to vessels across the world-- often he inadvertently finds himself embroiled in situations that require him to eschew his regular administrative duties and assist in combat situations as a line officer.

Brennan has also expressed a desire to attempt to enter the space service, a section of the military led by the UEO in the aftermath of the attack on Earth by off-worlders.
Hobbies & Interests Brennan has an interest in the philosophy of war, the arts and video games. He's a fairly introverted individual who enjoys his solitary time, though does enjoy an occasional performance when playing drums or guitar.

Personal History Ralphonze Brennan was born on the 13 APR 1988 to Alphonze and Rachel Brennan. The Brennans spent their early life as many military families did, moving between naval bases as Alphonze worked as a technical officer aboard many vessels during the 1980s and 90s. In 1999, Alphonze was honourably discharged from the United States Navy after serving his enlistment and set up a mechanics workshop just outside of Boston, Massachusetts.

Ralph never found the more consistent life of a civilian family terribly interesting and aimed to join the USN when he graduated high school. However, taking an interest in politics and considering working in the Foreign Service he went on to complete a Bachelor and Masters degree from MIT. Degree in hand, a more seasoned Ralph Brennan found himself in a navy recruiter's office and was instead cashiered into Officer Candidate School.

In his studies and training to be an officer, Ralph excelled, spurred on partly by his childhood heroes-- being his father's superior officers when he was in active service. After passing through the phases of his officer training, the year of 2012 brought Ralph a position in the second OCS class of the year and a ticket into Surface Warfare School.

After completing the theory components of the SWO course, the newly commissioned Brennan was unleashed upon the USS San Jacinto to complete his training. Onboard, he learned the ropes of life at sea, impressing his supervising officers. During his time aboard, Brennan also qualified to partake in Visit, Board, Search, and Seizure boarding teams. He found that while he enjoyed the seafaring aspects of being in the SWO community, his passion was in VBSS. This job allowed Ralph to interact and assist people in need, take direct action when required, and flex his skills as a negotiator and problem solver. As a result, Brennan would find himself as a regular member of the VBSS teams, and eventually a team leader, as his career progressed. Continuing his service, the San Jacinto retained Brennan for a further 6 months in 2013, where he served as a gunnery officer.

Promoted to Lieutenant JG in 2015, Brennan was reassigned to the USS Mason where he was given the opportunity to flex his leadership muscles. Serving again as Gunnery Officer, he also spent considerable time learning the ropes to qualify as a CIC Watch Officer. In this time, he also found himself on the rotation as the vessels' VBSS crew leaders.

Aboard the Mason, Brennan was noted for his calm and level demeanour, even in the face of danger. This was never more prevalent than during the Mason's attachment to an anti-narcotic task force that saw Brennan come face to face with drug runners and mules on land and sea. Brennan also took part in an operation that oversaw the dismantling of a narcotic operation in Colombia, where he was required to perform surveillance that culminated in a search-and-seizure raid that led to the arrest of a merciless drug lord.

Noted for his efforts in South America, Brennan was reassigned to the USS Sterett first as CIC Watch Officer, and then Officer of the Deck. This role eventually took Brennan away from the direct action that he enjoyed, but exposed him to the areas of command and administration that set him up for his future. Noting his potential in these areas and following almost three years of service aboard, the USS Sterett's commanding officer appointed Brennan as the vessel's acting executive officer as he recovered from an illness. During this time, Brennan was responsible for a negotiation involving the recovery of hostages taken by insurgent on a British oil rig. Unbelievably, Brennan was able to settle the situation by promising the pirates a selection of games consoles and a sum of cash in exchange for their retreat from the platform. While praised by superiors for his ingenuity, Brennan earned much derisive attention during this time and was nicknamed Satan Claus for ruining christmas of that year, by giving away Sterett's entertainment systems and booze money to the pirates.

Brennan found command to be a position where he flourished, both in supporting his crew and the naval operations assigned to the Sterett. Notably, the Sterett went on to be involved in a number of missions to deter Russian submarine incursions in the Atlantic, and in one case aided the defection of a Russian sailor to the United States. This exposed Brennan to an area of diplomatic relations that he was hardly expecting, though ably endured with the assistance of the acting CO.

In the later phases of Ralph's tour of the Sterett, it was made clear to him that Washington was keen to move him closer to home. His experience in VBSS had Ralph reassigned to Naval Station Great Lakes on TAD as the head weapons instructor, before he was reassigned to the Office of the Naval Inspector General, based in the Washington Navy Yard. Assuming duties of an investigative field officer, Brennan was often sent out to assess the warfighting capabilities in assignments across the world. In addition to this, he found himself tailing POTUS when assigned to carry the nuclear football on more than one occasion. While this was often a domestic duty, Brennan did once carry the football during an historic visit to South Korea by POTUS in regards to a treaty with North Korea. An incident when carrying the football resulted in a hushed controversy that while not made public, resulted in Brennan being overlooked for promotion when his promotion package was submitted in 2021.

Brennan continued in his role in the Inspector Generals office for another year, until a close encounter with a Jaffa escapee in San Diego brought him into the fold with the UEO's efforts regarding a top secret mode of off-world transportation. Brennan's assignment to the Inspector General has now concluded and further information on his whereabouts are restricted.
