Mission: Jumping Right In
Location: SGC Antarctica
884 words - 1.8 OF Standard Post Measure

Scarlett stepped off the military transport that had ferried her to the Antarctic. No one had mentioned the fact that base was an Antarctic outpost, all she knew was it was called McMurdo Station. She’d spent most of the journey trust up like a Christmas turkey in thick layers of clothes just to keep warm. Unlike most of those going she knew a lot more about the Stargate thanks to the Tok’ra symbiont that once shared her body. She had, of course, been told to keep her history with the symbiont to herself until such time as it became relevant.

After passing through security and stowing her things in her room she made her way to the mess hall to get herself something to eat and drink. It was nice to be inside in the warm and she was welcomed politely considering she was a civilian and not military personnel although being a General’s daughter tended to get her a little more respect. Not that she would purposely advertise the fact that her father was a General.

First things first she needed to find her quarters and get settled in. It was easier to drop off her hand luggage before exploring.

~ A little while later ~

Having made her way to deck 18 and found her office, Scarlett had been spending some time making it feel less like a plain unwelcoming space and more her working space. She’d managed to empty a box of her reading and writing books onto shelves and put out some stationery on her desk, unpacked a small comfy throw which she’d draped over her chair and also unboxed a square faux fur rug which she’d put in front of her desk.

Happy with how it looked she pushed her other couple of boxes to one side and decided to visit the Archaeology and Linguistics library which was more or less next door. As she walked in her mouth dropped open and her jaw almost hit the floor at the sight before her. There was some packed things still waiting to be unpacked but someone had already made quite a dent in the unpacking. There were rows and rows of shelves of books, a large centre work space on which to lie out books to work from, then there were artefacts neatly arranged on some shelves too. All things she couldn’t wait to look through.

Walking over to a shelf she stopped in her tracks as she came face to face with a device that made her instincts scream. What little knowledge she had left over from her few days as a host to Tok’ra symbiont Shani told her that the device was bad news. She muttered to herself as she picked it up, it resembled a metal hand glove with a jewel like device in the middle of the Palm, a Kara Kesh that was it! A Goa’uld energy glove.

Out of curiosity she put it on her hand, it took a few minutes of wear and a sudden thought of whether it actually worked when it suddenly started to do just that. Horrified she quickly took it off and put it back where she’d found it. She was told she’d be able to use Goa’uld technology due to the presence of naquadah in her blood but this was her first interaction with the technology. She wasn’t sure whether she liked how it felt or not.

She settled down on a seat at the large work station and turned the first page on the writing book that was resting on the desk ready for use, she liked to keep a diary that she could look back on and now seemed as good a time as any to start it.

Day 1 - Well I’ve arrived, I wasn’t sure what I’d find when I got here, or what kind of reception I’d get but so far it’s been a lot better than I expected. I have to admit I’m going to miss not having a window and a view but I can put up with that given the importance of why I’m here.

I’ve just encountered my first piece of Goa’uld technology, the Kara Kesh from what I remember from Shani. I don’t have much knowledge but that seemed to spring to mind and they were right, the naquadah in my blood does help to make this tech work. I’m not sure if I like that or not, it creeped me out but at the same time it felt oddly good so I’m going to stay clear of the technology for now.

I’m hoping to encounter the Tok’ra at some point, I’d like to know more about Shani. She only shared my body for a matter of weeks but she gave her life to save me. She could have simply taken me with her but she didn’t, the loss was hard but it gave me this amazing opportunity.

She put her pen down and closed up the book, picking it up she carried it with her to take it back to her office and put it away in the draw of her desk.
